Designing a more accessible path to connection

Canvas Connection is a nonprofit organization creating inclusive opportunities, resources, and experiences for people with diverse needs. The organization needed a digital presence that could communicate its mission clearly while remaining welcoming, accessible, and easy to maintain.

Aether Creative Studio designed and developed a responsive Webflow website grounded in Universal Design, creating a calmer, clearer experience for visitors and a flexible foundation for future growth.

The challenge

Canvas Connection serves people with a wide range of cognitive, sensory, and physical needs. Its website therefore needed to do more than meet conventional accessibility requirements: it needed to feel understandable, predictable, and reassuring throughout the experience.

The project also required a scalable structure that could support expanding programs, resources, partnerships, sponsors, events, and future content without making the site difficult to manage.

The approach

Accessibility informed the design from the beginning. Content was organized into clear pathways, interaction patterns were kept consistent, and visual hierarchy was used to reduce cognitive load.

A reusable design system established the site’s typography, colors, spacing, components, and responsive behavior. Tablet and mobile layouts were intentionally adapted rather than simply compressed, preserving readable content, comfortable touch targets, and clear navigation across screen sizes.

The Webflow build followed Client-First principles and used reusable components, global variables, and CMS Collections to create a maintainable foundation for the organization.

Accessibility by design

  • Semantic page structure and logical heading order
  • Keyboard-accessible navigation and interactions
  • Visible focus states
  • Descriptive links and image alternatives
  • Accessible color contrast
  • Reduced-motion consideration
  • Clear form labels and feedback
  • Touch-friendly interactive elements
  • Support for zoom and responsive reflow

The experience was developed toward WCAG 2.2 AA standards, making accessibility part of the site’s architecture rather than a final compliance layer.

The outcome

The completed website gives Canvas Connection a more confident and cohesive digital presence. Visitors can more easily understand the organization, explore its work, discover ways to participate, and connect with its mission.

Behind the experience is a flexible Webflow system that can grow alongside the nonprofit, supporting new content, programs, partnerships, and future digital initiatives without requiring the organization to rebuild from the beginning.
